The Nigeria U20 team yesterday played a 3-3 draw against the U23 team of German Bundesliga side Freiburg in their first test game ahead of their campaign at the World Youth Championship in Poland.
Owngoalnigeria.com Mark Rowland who’s based in Germany watched the test game which saw Nigeria comeback twice from a two goal deficit to draw 3-3, thanks to goals from Effiom Maxwell, Tom Dele-Bashiru and Jerome Akor.
Here are the five players who impressed our correspondent the most during the game.
Muhammed Zulkifilu – He was by far the man of the match for the Nigerian team. Covered lot of grounds and also showed quick pair of heels to leave his markers in their wake. Should make the World Youth Championship squad on the strength of his performance yesterday.
Jerome Akor– Lived up to the reputation of one of the most highly rated youngsters in Norway. Strong, quick and brave in duels he took his goal really well and looked a threat all through the game. No wonder coach Paul Aigbogun is counting on the Sogndal teen to lead the line for his team.
Tom Dele-Bashiru – Oozed class with his every single touch of the ball. Looked deadly from set pieces and took the game to the opponents brilliantly. Uses both feet very well. Looks like steal for Nigeria from England where he played for their youth team. Expected to depart Manchester City this summer but that could be delayed until after the World Youth Championship.
Solomon Ogberahwe – Onome as the El-Kanemi left full back is called by his teammates showed why he made the squad as back up to captain Ikouwem Udoh. He was rock solid in his tackles and gave the Germans no room to penetrate through his flank.
Mike Zarumma – He is slowly becoming one of Nigeria’s most promising options at right back. Neat and tidy in duels. His ability to join the attack gave Freiburg a lot to deal with. The manner which he combines his defensive duties with forays upfront is worth praising.
