Coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr says the team now has a style of play which has helped them in their last set of games specifically in the friendly games against Ukraine (2-2) and Brazil (1-1) respectively before yesterday’s win over Benin Republic.
Nigeria recovered from going behind to beat the Squirrels of Benin Republic 2-1 with goals from the duo of Victor Osimhen and Samuel Kalu helping them to all three points and also top of their group after the first round of games.
The other group game ended in a 1-1 draw and Nigeria will be hoping to consolidate their position as group leaders when they take on Lesotho on Sunday in Maseru in their second group game of the qualifiers for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
Rohr set up the team in a 4-3-3 formation but beyond what is on paper the coach explained that their execution of the formation is a testament of the new style they are playing with presently.
Speaking on the way the team played against Benin Republic, Rohr said the team now has a style of play which was instrumental in the win over Benin Republic. He also cited the strength in depth ofthe team as another factor.
The coach who has been criticised by a section of the media in Nigeria for not giving the team an identity in their style of play appears to suggest that it’s now a thing of the past judging by how they have approached their last three games by playing quick one touch football particularly in attack. ” Like we did in our last matches. We have now a style of playing football which is very interesting, a lot of movement. One touch, two touch, quick wingers young players and I think that in the second half we even could score a third goal but am happy about this 2-1 win because when you start the game losing 0-1 and then you come back and win, it’s very interesting for the team and then you go to the top in the match”, the coach explained.
” I’m happy to see that the two changes I made since the Brazil game bringing in Ola Aina and Samuel Kalu. These two players did very well also. It’s good for the players to know that other players can come in and do very well”.
