The midfield for Nigeria in their clash against South Africa was a major concern for fans of the team due to the absence of Wilfred Ndidi who is suspended and the duo of captain John Obi Mikel and Ogenyi Onazi who were not called up.
Coach Gernot Rohr further compounded fears when he named just four midfielders in his squad for the game and after four training sessions, he has settled for the trio of John Ogu, Oghenekaro Etebo and Alex Iwobi as his centre midfielder.
Ogu will occupy the defensive midfield role with Etebo ahead of him while Iwobi will continue in his role as number ten for the Super Eagles just like he did in the back to back games against Libya.
Rohr want the midfield three to release the wing backs and the forward players to enable them use their pace against the defence of South Africa , hence the instruction is for them to move the ball quickly.
Iwobi is expected to also put in a defensive shift when the team loses possession but his main duty is to carve out openings with well weighted and incisive passes like he did in their previous games.
