Captain of the senior national team of Nigeria John Obi Mikel has aimed a subtle dig at English Premier League side Arsenal over their inability to win as many trophies as his former side Chelsea.
Mikel enjoyed a trophy laden career with Chelsea for ten seasons before moving to Chinese side Tianjin Teda and his stay at the Stamford Bridge outfit coincided with a barren run of trophies for Arsenal.
Speaking at the launch of his foundation in Lagos, the 31 year old charged children at the event to work hard in other to earn the chance to play for the senior national team of Nigeria and other teams in Europe.
He specifically mentioned Chelsea and Manchester United when speaking about teams the kids should aspire to play for in order to win major trophies, his comments made the kids to chorus Arsenal and he responded with a subtle dig at the Gunners over their trophy haul.
“So for me it’s all about playing football and hopefully one day you guys will be representing Nigeria, represent the national team or some of you will be playing for Chelsea, Manchester United , winning the Premier League, winning the Champions League “, he said and that led to shouts of Arsenal which drew a response from him.
