Former Nigeria international defender Efe Ambrose says the senior national team of Nigeria would have beaten France at the 2018 World Cup if Video Assistance Referee (VAR) was in use back then.
Ambrose was part of the Nigerian team that was beaten 2-0 by France in the round of 16 at the World Cup in Brazil. A game which was dominated by Nigeria but goals from Paul Pogba and a Joseph Yobo own goal condemned them to defeat.
Ambrose has now picked out two key moments which he felt had an impact on the final result saying if there was VAR as we have now, Super Eagles would probably have won the game.
“ I just watched the highlight you sent to me of the game in 2014 where we lost to France 0-2. Looking back at two decisions that worked against us and had a final impact on the result maybe it could have gone in our favour with VAR”, Ambrose told OwnGoalNigeria.com.
“ First of all, the goal scored by Emmanuel Emenike that was ruled out for offside with scored at 0-0 would probably have stood after VAR review and Blaise Matuildi tackle that led to the injury to Ogenyi Onazi would have been reviewed as a red card.
“ Those two decisions decided that game more than anything else. We were on top before Onazi went off injured but if we had VAR there is no way Matuildi would have completed the game. He would have been sent off”, he concluded.
