Nigeria international and Genk of Belgium striker Paul Onuachu was in a state of surprise when he received his golden boot award shortly before their loss against Gent last weekend.
Onuachu finished as top scorer last season in the Belgium top division earning the golden boot in the process. He received it shortly before kick off from his girlfriend. They are expected to tie the knot in June.
He said receiving the award from her came as a surprise particularly when he saw her walking onto the pitch before kick off.
“That was a huge surprise for me,” said Onachu afterwards. “I was not aware of this at all. Tracy always comes to watch and now I suddenly saw them walking onto the field”, he said.
“A beautiful moment, although this is where disappointment comes in. We lost and we are doomed for European football. Thanks to the team I won this Golden Boot. It looks good, but it’s harder to enjoy it after such a disappointing defeat.”
Speaking on his future, the 27 year old said he is yet to be informed about any potential move away . “I am still under contract here. I have no more news. There were also rumors last year, but I’m still here.”
