English Premier League side Chelsea booked their place in the knock out round of the UEFA Champions League by defeating hard fighting Austrian side RB Salzburg 2-1.
Chelsea struck first through Matteo Kovacic but RB Salzburg ensured they go into the break leveled at 1-1 when Chibuike Adamu stab home a cross much to the excitement of the fans at the Red Bull Arena.
That joy was however not sustained till the end as Kai Haverts scored what ended as the decisive goal of the game to hand Chelsea a 2-1 win and also a spot in th knock rounds, but a Nigerian made his mark in the game.
Born in Kano state Nigeria to parents who are from the eastern parts of Nigeria, Chibuike Adamu cuts across as an unknown name within discussions around Nigerian football. He is however well known in Austria.
His parents migrated to Austria and he has since been granted citizenship and he has represented his new country from U18 right up to the senior national team. Nigeria however made attempts to have him switch allegiance in 2019.
The then coach of the U20 team of Nigeria Paul Aigbogun spoke with his representatives about having him represent Nigeria at the U20 World Cup that year, but he was told in clear terms that the then 17 year old is focused on making the grades with Austria.
