The senior national team of Nigeria will have a new coach by the end of this month as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) steps up plans to replace Jose Peseiro, who left upon the expiration of his contract in February, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Peseiro was the Super Eagles third coach within three months after the exit of Gernot Rohr. Austine Eguavoen was in charge for a while before Peseiro, who lasted 18 months was appointed as coach.

Fresh from failing to make it to the world cup under Eguavoen, Peseiro led them to the AFCON where they finished second after losing 1-2 to the host in the final. It was their best finish in the tournament since 2013 when they were crowned champions.

Despite that Rohr believed the team hasn’t really made significant progress since his departure two years ago in controversial circumstances, three weeks to the AFCON and two months before the world cup qualifiers play off, which they lost to Ghana.

” They haven’t really made the progress that they thought when I was asked to leave. It is still more of the players I left behind and a style that wasn’t their best at the AFCON”, Rohr said.

Despite the coach tipped the Super Eagles as favorite for the 2026 World Cup ticket ahead of is new team Benin Republic, who are in the same group with the Super Eagles with South Africa, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Rwanda completing the group.

Rwanda are currently leading the group with four points with four points ahead of second place South Africa on three points, Nigeria sits third with two points, but Rohr insist on them as favorite for the sole ticket from the group.

” They (Super Eagles) are just two points behind the group leaders and that is an advantage they can cancel in the next round of games. You can’t write off a team with the quality of the Nigerian side. Every team in the group knows this”, he concluded.
