Argentina are going to be without the service of their first choice goalkeeper Sergio Romero when the World Cup kicks off in June, the FA of the country has confirmed.
Romero suffered a knee injury in training yesterday with the rest of the Argentina squad in preparation for the World Cup and a statement on the Argentinian Football Association website reveals he will not participate at the World Cup.
According to the statement, the 31 year old Manchester United goalkeeper suffered a joint blockage on his right knee which requires surgery and in the next few days a replacement is expected to be named.
Already Argentina have named their 23 man squad for the World Cup with Chelsea’s Willy Caballero and Franco Armani the other goalkeepers in the squad named by coach Jorge Sampaoli.
Grouped alongside Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria, Argentina will open their campaign with a game against Iceland before taking on Croatia in their second group game. Their final group game will see them square up against Nigeria.
