Yesterday news broke out that the Appeal Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded the title of the recently concluded AFCON to the host Morocco, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Morocco were beaten 1-0 by Senegal in the final of the tournament, which was marred by a walk out by Senegal after Morocco were awarded a dubious penalty at the end of the game. The game restarted after almost twenty minutes.
Brahim Diaz took the resultant spot kick, but his attempt to score what is called a panenka backfired with Eduoard Mendy saving his effort with ease, sending the game into extra time.
Pape Gueye scored what ended as the winner in extra time to hand his team the title of African champions. Morocco protested that they should be awarded the title for Senegal walking out of the game for that length of time.
Yesterday in the hearing on their appeal to CAF’s decision to recognise Senegal as the champions. The Appeal Committee led by a Nigerian justice Roli Daibo Harriman awarded the game to Morocco.
She led the nine-member team which took the decision, that has since turned into a global issue with Senegal rejecting the judgement, and have taken their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sports ( CAS).
