Former coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Daniel Amokachi has once again backed his statement on why Ostersunds of Sweden forward Alhaji Gero should have been included in Nigeria’s World Cup squad.
Few days ago, Amokachi said the power playing former Nigeria U20 forward Gero who was one of the stars of surprised Europa League side Ostersunds in the recently concluded season should have made the 30 man provisional list of Nigeria for the World Cup.
His comments drew some criticism for the former Everton forward who was assistant to former coach Stephen Keshi at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where Nigeria crashed out of the second round by losing 2-0 to France.
However ” The Bull” like Amokachi is fondly called maintained his statement in a chat with Owngoalnigeria.com, insisting that Gero should have been called up to fight for a spot.
” He (Gero) has the size of a top striker, something Nigeria only have in Odion Ighalo. Gero is very strong and we saw what he did in the Europa League for a modest team like Ostersunds “, he said.
” I’m standing by my words. He should have been called up at least to fight for a spot particularly since Brown Ideye isn’t in the squad. Gero has the attributes to lead the line as a lone striker due to his physical nature”, he concluded.
