Recently one cap England international forward John Fashanu was reported as saying former players of the senior national team of England at entitled to some kind of payment for representing England at senior level.

According to Fashanu it’s probably the reason why the duo of Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham took up a chance with the senior national team of England than that of Nigeria despite the fact that they will have more playing time with Nigeria.

The former Wimbledon striker claims he earns 5 million Naira monthly as pension for representing England once, a claim that Owngoalnigeria.com can now authoritatively say it’s false.

England from our extensive research don’t have such a scheme for payments of former players as it’s against FIFA ethics for insurance of players as they are mostly covered by the world soccer governing body insurance scheme while on international duty.

However clubs do have such scheme and maybe that’s what Fashanu was referring to as he said in the interview that he is earning 5 million Naira monthly as part of his benefits of playing football in England and didn’t mention the national team.

“Till today, I still get my benefits, my pensions. I get N5m monthly as pensions for being an ex-footballer in England and I am now in my 50s”, Fashanu was quoted as saying by Daily Trust.
