61 year old Swede Jan Olof “Janne” Andersson has been picked as the new coach of the senior national team of Nigeria by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

The coach will replace Finidi George who left his post six weeks ago after a poor run of results in the world cup qualifiers games, where the team were held to a 1-1 draw by South Africa before losing 1-2 to Benin Republic.

Andersson got the nod ahead of the duo of Eric Chelle and Tom Saintfeit, who were the only two left in the four coaches shortlisted for the job after Herve Renard turned down the opportunity and Steve McClaren took up the Jamaica national team job.

He is expected to get down to work immediately with the 2025 AFCON qualifiers games against Benin Republic and Rwanda respectively. We pick five major high points of his coaching career so far.

1. In July 2016, Andersson was named the 47th best manager in the world by football magazine FourFourTwo. In November 2018, Andersson was named by FourFourTwo as the 17th best manager in the world. At the 2019 Swedish Sports Awards, Andersson was named Coach of the Year.

2. He lead Sweden to their best ever performance at the world cup in six attempts in 2018 when they got to the quarter final before losing to England.

3. As coach of Sweden the team did the unbelievable by finishing top of their world cup 2018 group that included defending champions Germany, South Korea and Mexico.

4. Andersson powered Sweden to the Nations League League A and led the team to high profile wins over Netherlands and Italy respectively to send them packing from major tournaments.

5. His record for Sweden reads 48 wins from 94 games earning him a 51 percent success rate in his time at the helm.

Official- 61 Year Old Swede Is New Coach Of Super Eagles

0

Jan Olof “Janne” Andersson has been picked by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as the new coach of the senior national team of Nigeria according to ScoreNigeria.

He was picked by the NFF as the new coach of the team despite not making that list of shortlisted coaches for the job made vacant by the departure of Finidi George six months ago.

We gathered that the president of the football body Ibrahim Musa Gusau favoured the Swede who guided Sweden to the last world cup ahead of the duo of Eric Chelle and Tom Saintfeit, who were the only two left in the shortlist of coaches for the job.

His last job was with the national team of Sweden and he guided them to the 2018 World Cup and also the 2020 Euros, but left his role after seven years following their failure to make it to the 2022 ans the 2024 European Championship.

The coach is expected to be officially unveiled next week following the approval of his appointment by the country’s minister for sports senator John Enoh. He will sign a one year deal with the option of another year based on his success in his first year in charge.

Andersson’s first task will be the AFCON 2025 qualifiers games against Benin Republic and Rwanda respectively in September, and as we reported the coach has already started scouting the opponents and also the list of Super Eagles players who will be invited for the game.

Eguavoen Rules Himself Out Of Super Eagles Job, Picks Date For Announcement Of New Coach

0

Austine Eguavoen has ruled himself out of the possible candidates to be the next coach of the senior national team of Nigeria, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

The Super Eagles have been without a substantive coach since the exit of Finidi George as coach six weeks ago following a poor performance in the world cup qualifiers, where the Super Eagles played a 1-1 draw against South Africa in Uyo before losing 1-2 to Benin Republic at their adopted home ground in Cote d’Ivoire.

In a communique made public, the NFF said they are looking for an expatriate coach to take over as coach owing to the team’s precarious position in the world cup qualifiers group, and the start of the 2025 AFCON, however nothing has really happened since that announcement.

Herve Renard who was the anointed choice to take over as coach turned down the job leaving the duo of Eric Chelle and Tom Saintfeit as the front runners for the job, but recent report suggest that their is the likelihood that none of the aforementioned duo will get the job.

Speaking on the situation and with the start of the AFCON qualifiers a little over three weeks from now , Eguavoen touted as one of the possible interim coaches of the team ruled himself out of the job but said a new coach will be presented next weekend if all goes according to plan.

The technical director of the NFF made this known to pressmen shortly after a meeting of the technical committee, which was meant to deliberate on the pressing issue of a new coach for the Super Eagles ahead of the games against Benin Republic and Rwanda respectively.

Ministerial Backing – NFF Ponders Handing Super Eagles Job To Samson Siasia

0

A source at the ministry for sports says the minister senator John Enoh is favorable disposed to the idea of Samson Siasia taking over as the new coach of the Super Eagles following the expiration of his ban, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Siasia’s ban for alleged match fixing has expired and with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) yet to settle for a replacement for Finidi George who left his role six weeks ago, the idea of hiring Siasia has been proposed by the camp of the minister to the NFF.

We exclusively gathered that the minister vetoed the idea of hiring either Eric Chelle or Tom Saintfeit insisting that they are not better than Siasia, who in his words was a victim of circumstance and deserves a second chance with the Super Eagles.

If he gets his way it will see the 57 year old return to the role he has twice handled but failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations on both occasions. He is however seen as one of the most successful Nigerian coaches around and well respected and loved.

His exploits with the 2005 U20 team where they went all the way before losing in the final to a Lionel Messi inspired agent warmed him into the hearts of Nigeria. He followed it up with a silver and bronze medal finish at the 2008 and 2016 Olympic football event respectively with the U23 team.

Not Chelle, Not Saintfeit – NFF Goes For Mysterious Choice As New Coach Of Super Eagles

0

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has ditched plans to appoint one of the duo of Eric Chelle and Tom Saintfeit as the new coach of the senior national team of Nigeria, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Yesterday the technical committee sat on the pressing issue of a new coach for the Super Eagles with the AFCON 2025 games against Benin Republic and Rwanda respectively around the corner, but a whole new option was presented to them.

We gathered that the meeting which was meant to make a firm decision on one of the two coaches reached a premature end, when members were informed of an entirely different option as coach of the team expected to be made public soon.

A choice of the president Ibrahim Musa Gusau, the new man is said to have the blessing of the minister for sports senator John Enoh, who was opposed to the idea of one of the duo of Chelle and Saintfeit the two leading contenders for the job.

His identity wasn’t made public to the committee with some details of his contract yet to be finalized. There are chances that all could be done by the weekend ahead of his unveiling next week.

Nigerian Talent on the Rise: Key Players to Watch in Premier League & Europe This Season

0

Nigeria has established itself as a dominant force in African football, constantly generating highly skilled players who often excel in the best divisions across Europe.

The European domestic football season is just around the corner, and Nigerian supporters can anticipate the presence of their country’s greatest players, who will bring brilliance to their respective clubs and competitions.

As the world’s most popular sport continues to evolve, a fresh cohort of talented Nigerian players is emerging, demonstrating their abilities and promise on some of the largest global platforms. We believe it’s a good time to highlight the rising talent competing in the Premier League and throughout Europe’s most prominent divisions for the 2024/24 season, so join us today as we direct you to which African stars you should be looking out for this term.

Ethan Nwaneri (Arsenal, EPL)

Among the current group of players emerging from Hale End, Ethan Nwaneri is regarded as the most highly appreciated. His ascent has been extraordinary, reaching its pinnacle when he became the youngest player to ever participate in an English top-tier match two seasons ago, at the tender age of 15 years and 181 days.

Despite the abundance of talent in the Arsenal midfield, Nwaneri, who is still eligible to play for Nigeria, may find it difficult to secure a spot in the starting lineup at the moment. However, he has been prominently featured in preseason matches, and another year with the first team will undoubtedly allow him to impress Mikel Arteta even more.

Alex Iwobi (Fulham, EPL)

Alex Iwobi, the Nigerian playmaker, appears to be one of the most well-prepared and astute players on the Super Eagles team as they approach the upcoming season.

Iwobi has had a successful pre-season with his club, Fulham, and is undoubtedly one of Nigeria’s most prominent football exporters globally.

Following a highly successful last campaign, the 28-year-old will want to build upon his previous achievements. Considering his exceptional performance throughout pre-season, there is no reason to doubt his ability to do so.

Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester City, EPL)

Ndidi, a Nigerian defensive midfielder, has returned to the English Premier League with Leicester City following a season in the EFL Championship.

Despite receiving several offers from other clubs, he signed a new three-year agreement with the midlands side. This decision was made in anticipation of a new era under Steve Cooper’s leadership following Enzo Maresca’s departure from Chelsea.

Ndidi experienced what may be considered his most exceptional season in quite some time, albeit under the tutelage of the recently departed Maresca. As the Italian coach arrives at Chelsea, observing how the Super Eagles midfielder will adapt to Leicester’s efforts to regain their position as a permanent Premier League unit will be intriguing.

Leicester is expected to be instantly relegated back to Championship football at the sportsbooks. The most popular football betting websites have labelled City’s relegation price at average odds of 1.44, slightly behind Ipswich, Southampton, and Nottingham Forest.

However, if anyone can assist in defying those bookmaker odds, the likes of Ndidi, alongside the striking prowess of Stephy Mavididi, certainly can!

Ademola Lookman (Atlanta, Serie A)

Nigeria has witnessed a remarkable improvement in one of its players. Following an extraordinary season with Atalanta, this player has excelled not only in Europe but also globally.

Ademola Lookman had a phenomenal season last year, guiding his Italian team to their first-ever European triumph. He achieved this feat by being the first to score a hat-trick in a final of a significant European competition.

Lookman emerged as one of the most outstanding Nigerian players in 2023 and is now the frontrunner to succeed Osimhen as Africa’s top player. Scheduled to begin in 2024/25, this 26-year-old individual is Nigeria’s top player to watch. Despite not making a significant impression in the UEFA Super Cup versus Real Madrid, we anticipate him dominating the Serie A again this season.

Terem Moffi (Nice, Ligue 1)

Terem Moffi emerged as Nigeria’s most prominent player in the French Ligue 1, having scored 11 goals and provided two assists in 30 outings during the previous season.

Moffi is expected to be the top contender among Nigerian players next season. He intends to enhance his statistics for Nice, building upon his exceptional performance from 2023. Additionally, it should be noted that this season, the 25-year-old player will have Europe on his resume, as he successfully assisted the team to the Europa League.

From Owerri To Scoring In LaLiga In Two Years- Uche Rescues Getafe From Defeat Against Bilbao

0

Getafe and Athletic Bilbao opened the LaLiga season in Spain by playing a 1-1 draw at the San Mames stadium, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Playing in front of their fans, Bilbao took the lead when Oihan Sancet rifled home a low shot from the edge of the box in the 27th minute. A lead they protected going into the half time break.

Four minutes after an hour into the game, relatively unknown Nigerian midfielder Uche Chrisantus who was surprisingly deployed higher up the pitch in an attacking role drew Getafe level.

He rose highest from a free kick to power home a well placed header introducing himself to the Spanish top flight with a debut goal. He joined the team in the summer from 3rd division side Cueta.

The 20 year old was a part of the Nigeria U23 team last year while playing for Moralo in the Spanish fifth division. Third division Cueta picked him up after a season there with the intention of integrating him into their youth team, but he blew their thoughts away and was instantly made a part of the first team by coach José Juan Romero.

He played in all but two games last season making a total of 22 appearances from a possible 24. One of the games he missed was due to technical issues, while the other was down to serving a suspension for accumulated bookings. He played 90 minutes in every game last season.

Uche only left the Nigerian city of Owerri two years ago to begin his career abroad making his rise to the top league in Spain from the fifth division more astonishing, but also a testament to his ability which is aided by his physique aside other attributes.

Eguavoen Gets The Nod To Lead Super Eagles As Interim Coach For AFCON Qualifiers

0

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will appoint an interim coach in the event that they fail to reach total agreement with a new substantive coach for the senior national team of Nigeria, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Super Eagles will be back in action in September for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers games against Benin Republic and Rwanda respectively, but six weeks after the exit of Finidi George as coach the body is yet to name a replacement.

Talks have been on with prospective coaches for the role with the duo of Tom Saintfeit and Eric Chelle the favourite for the job, following the decision of Herve Renard to snub the job based on the low salary on offer.

Earlier today the technical committee of the NFF met to discuss the issue with the AFCON qualifiers really close but no much progress was made, leaving a member of the board to say the option of an interim coach is a huge possibility with time running out on them.

He said Austine Eguavoen is for now the ready and available choice for the job, and it will be just for the two games against Benin Republic and Rwanda respectively with a new coach expected to take over after the games.

It is all still subject to change if a decision is reached before the end of this week.

A midfielder who has an eye for goal and is also assured in tackles is tipped to be one of the breakout stars of the new season, and Bordalás shares the same optimism.

“We are happy with Uche. It was a personal request of mine to the president in the winter. He has come with great enthusiasm, he has great potential. The moment of truth is the championship. Now we will know what level he can give us, we have a lot of confidence in him”, he said ahead of the game.

NFF Hands List Of Players To Be Scouted To New Super Eagles Coach, Monaco, Everton Prospects Listed

The technical department of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) says they have compiled a list of players who will be forwarded to the new coach of the senior national team of Nigeria for scouting in view of a call up, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

A new coach is expected to be named for the Super Eagles ahead of the start of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers games against Benin Republic and Rwanda respectively in September.

As we exclusively reported the technical department of the NFF already sent out provisional invitation letters to players for the games, with an incoming coach expected to trim the number down to 25 for the games.

We further gathered from a member of the department, it doesn’t end there as they have a list of eligible players for the team which they will pass on to the coach when he officially resumes work for further scouting.

He hinted that newly signed Monaco forward George Ilenikhena , Everton’s Tim Iroegbunam and Elijah Adebayo of Luton town are listed in the region of players born abroad, while Uche Chrisantus of Getafe, Benjamin Fredrick of Brentford and Victor Orakpo of Ligue 1 side Nice were listed as players without dual nationality who should be watched closely.

Eric Chelle Not Losing Sleep Over Super Eagles Coaching Job After Impressing President Of NFF

0

One of the front runner for the job of the coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Eric Chelle is confident of his chances of clinching the job ahead of others interested in the job, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Chelle is in a straight battle with Tom Saintfeit for the job of the senior national team of Nigeria with Herve Renard salary demands ruling him out of the job, while Steve McClaren opt to pick up the head coach role of the Jamaica national team.

One among the two is likely to be named as the coach , but recent reports has it that Saintfeit is favoured for the job, and will likely be announced soon with the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers games against Benin Republic and Rwanda respectively draws near.

Despite that Chelle who met with the NFF president Ibrahim Musa Gusau in France, unlike Saintfeit who didn’t meet with the president is confident that he did enough during his meeting with Gusau to earn the job.

Sources close to the former coach of Mali says he has other options lined up including a role with French Ligue 1 side Lens in the event that he isn’t picked as the coach.
