Former Nigeria international defender Efe Ambrose has reacted to the decision of his former Derby County teammate Fikayo Tomori to snub Nigeria in order to continue his international career with Nigeria.
Tomori was called up to the senior national team of England for the first time earlier today bringing an end to speculation about his international future which he said will be decided at the end of the season.
Speaking to Owngoalnigeria.com, Ambrose said he was shock when he was told that Tomori has Nigerian roots because during their time at the club he didn’t for once talked about it.
Ambrose said most times players of Nigerian descent always like to introduce themselves when they say a fellow Nigerian particularly one that has played for the Super Eagles but that wasn’t the case with Tomori while they were at Derby County.
” Tomori was very popular at Derby. He was later voted the player of the season but not for once did he talked about his Nigerian roots. Infact it was a journalist friend of mine that told him he has Nigerian roots. It’s very unusual because most Nigerian players born abroad usually like to associate with fellow Nigerians particularly if you have played for the national team like I did for years”, Ambrose said.
On Tomori’s decision to play for England, the former Celtic defender said it didn’t come to him as a surprise because Tomori feels more British than Nigerian which is entirely not his fault considering that he was born and raised in England.
” I am not surprise, infact I would have if he decided to represent Nigeria. He feels very British which is understandable considering the fact that he was born and raised there. Canada are the biggest losers considering the fact that he played for them at U17 level base on what I gathered “, Ambrose said.
