The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has sent a plea to Africa football governing body CAF to consider the Nigeria U20 team for a spot in the U20 AFCON, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Nigeria missed out on picking one of the two tickets from the West Africa region after losing 1-4 to Burkina Faso in the final of the WAFU B tournament on Sunday.
The other ticket from the region was handed to Ghana as the host of the tournament, meaning the former practice where WAFU finalist are handed a spot in the U20 AFCON was shelved for just the tournament winners.
As first reported by Niyi Busari for BSN sports, the move was jointly agreed by all semi finalist before their game at the WAFU B tournament citing the 2025 edition of the AFCON, where Tunisia were handed a route into the tournament swelling the teams to 13.
Egypt were drafted in as the host after Cote d’Ivoire withdrew from it , and Tunisia who finished third in their zone were handed a spot to compete at the tournament.
” We are using the 2025 case of Tunisia to back our demand and hopefully we will get a favorable response. It was a joint decision signed by all four semi finalists not just us (Nigeria)”, an official of the NFF revealed.
