The burgeoning partnership between William Troost-Ekong and Chidozie Awaziem was once again one of the major highlight of the Super Eagles training session witnessed by Owngoalnigeria.com correspondent.
Yesterday Troost-Ekong and Awaziem partnered to good effect frustrating the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi and Oghenekaro Etebo from getting a clear shot at goal. The only goal scored by the Iheanacho lead attack came via the spot.
Their partnership started during training for the game against Corsica, and was transferred into the game proper which ended 1-1, with the Eagles conceding via the spot in the friendly game.
It continued against Togo, and once again gave goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa little to worry about as they shut out the Togolese forward in the friendly game which Nigeria won 3-0.
Although Awaziem is yet to play in a competitive game for Nigeria, he is strongly making a case to play against South Africa despite the arrival of Kenneth Omeruo who is the senior central defence player in the team.
Omeruo has played as a right back for the Super Eagles in the two games he last played for the team, but he is still favoured to play in defence with Troost-Ekong if he impresses the coach before Saturday’s game against South Africa.
